Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

Mary Cairncross Centre Vision

25th March 2014

The following is the text from a general media release made on 25th March 2014.

The Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve at Maleny is a much loved nature and visitor haven, that has been engaging and intriguing locals and tourists for more than 50 years.

A sensitive reshaping of the reserve’s building precinct is proposed to bolster Mary Cairncross’ reputation as a natural icon, and an innovative ‘centre for conservation, learning and partnerships’.

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said previous consultation highlighted that people want the new centre to capture the existing charm and natural qualities of this beautiful place, while sharing its unique stories and environmental messages in a captivating way.

“We have secured a highly regarded team of consultants to assist with the project, including Maleny based architects, cultural heritage and interpretive experts.  An advisory panel will guide the consultants in developing building and interpretive design concepts, and includes passionate and knowledgeable members of the Maleny community, our Friends and volunteer groups, hinterland tourism and the University of the Sunshine Coast”

The integrated building design will include an innovative education centre, group learning spaces, a small research area, a tea house, an eco-gift shop and improved facilities for volunteers and staff.  The centre will also help Council and its community partners to better deliver on the Deed of Trust for the reserve, which promotes the ‘exhibition’ of the reserve’s stunning flora, fauna an scenery.

Cr McKay emphasized that “the reshaped centre will in no way encroach on the rainforest and will be limited to the already developed footprint.”

Concept designs will be shared and discussed with the community mid-way through the year, before being finalised.  Designs and costs will then be presented to councillors to decide whether to proceed with ‘shovel ready’ drawings and a renewed search for construction funding.
